Steven Hill explains why we need to expand Social Security–and exactly how we can do it
“We don’t really have much choice in terms of expanding Social Security…the 401(k) system replacing pensions has completely failed. And it’s time to really get away from…the old nostrums and stereotypes and ideology and just become pragmatic about what’s going to be good for our nation’s seniors, what’s going to be good for retirement, what’s going to be good for the overall macroeconomy…doubling the monthly benefit is the way to go.”
Steven Hill is the author of Expand Social Security Now!: How to Ensure Americans Get the Retirement They Deserve. He is a cofounder of FairVote, an organization advocating for electoral reform, and the former director of the political reform program at the New America Foundation. He has written on a variety of topics related to political and economic reform in the United States.
In this 2016 presentation at the Economic Policy Insitute, he discusses what he considers sensible solutions to strengthening and expanding the Social Security program.
