Former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley has been confirmed as the new commissioner of the Social Security Administration (SSA). The agency hasn’t had a Senate-confirmed commissioner since July 2021, when the Biden administration removed Trump-nominee Andrew Saul from the role.

O’Malley was confirmed with a 50-11 bipartisan vote in the Senate, shortly before the lawmakers left for their winter break.

According to an article by Maryland Matters, O’Malley is considered a strong operational leader, which is just what the SSA needs right now.

Maryland Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin supported O’Malley, stating: “He has demonstrated time and time again that by focusing on performance management, smart governance and data driven results, he can bring change and accountability to large organizations and significantly improve government service to the American people.”

O’Malley’s priorities as commissioner will be to address Social Security’s looming solvency crisis and improve customer service.

Ensuring Social Security solvency is a priority for The Seniors Trust as well. We are working diligently to ensure that Social Security is available for all American retirees — now and in the future through passage of the Social Security Expansion Act. This landmark piece of legislation will boost monthly benefits to about $200, create a strong and long-lasting trust fund and guarantee that retired workers receive adequate Social Security benefits and a fair Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA).
