Inflation is still high and there appears to be no relief in sight at the grocery store. One community is taking action to help financially strapped seniors eat healthily on a budget.

According to an article by On Milwaukee, the county’s Hunger Task Force is teaching seniors how to make meals using foods they can receive from a food pantry. The free nutrition classes are held at senior centers throughout the city and provide interactive cooking demonstrations. A recent class featured a recipe for black bean and corn salad. Attendees also learned about the importance of low-sodium diets and sampled unsalted peanuts.

The monthly program, which is both educational and entertaining, covers a variety of topics such as identifying whole grains, sodium, and heart health, all to promote healthy eating on a budget.

The Seniors Trust is committed to improving the financial well-being of older Americans through the passage of The Social Security Expansion Act. It will give retirees an immediate benefits increase of about $200 a month, a fair annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), increased minimum benefits, and will ensure the long-term solvency of the Social Security program.
