Years ago, the traditional retirement age was 55 years old. It’s slowly been creeping up. Today, the Social Security Administration considers full retirement age to be 67 (for those people born in 1960 or later). Most Americans think that’s too old.

According to an article by CNBC, citing a report by Empower, people think retirement age should be 58. The average retirement age is much higher — 64 for men and 62 for women.

With Social Security facing solvency issues, some lawmakers and experts are calling for raising the full retirement age to 70 to help boost the trust fund reserves. We at The Seniors Trust have a better idea — the Social Security Expansion Act. This landmark piece of legislation will boost benefits, establish a fair annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), and ensure the long-term solvency of the Social Security program without requiring Americans to work until they are 70 or older.
