Why No One Wants to Be a Grandma or Grandpa These Days

Today’s active grandparents are shunning the titles of “grandma” and “grandpa.” According to an article by Good Housekeeping, baby boomers are not “one size fits all,” so they are seeking alternatives to the traditional terms of endearment. Today’s grandparents are choosing creative nicknames “more influenced by one’s culture, religion, traditions, family names, inside jokes, and whims.”

Many families still use the traditional Grandma and Grandpa titles, along with similar names such as Grammy, Gramsie, Nana, or Grampy, Papa, Poppy, Pop Pop, and so on.

But it seems an increasing number of grandparents are seeking fun, unique, and more youthful names such as Mimi or Gigi. Some families make up names related to the grandparents’ first name, such as LeLe for Lisa or BonBon for Bonnie.

Other families opt to let the grandchild determine the name. That’s why one family refers to grandma as Amy, because that’s what everyone else calls her.

The Seniors Trust is committed to helping older Americans through the passage of the Social Security Expansion Act. It will give retirees an immediate benefits increase of about $200 a month, a fair annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), increased minimum benefits, and ensure the long-term solvency of the Social Security program.
