Seniors Thrive on Canine Companionship and Feline Friendships
Pets for the Elderly is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The program, which began with two animal shelters near Cleveland, Ohio, has expanded into a nationwide non-profit connecting senior citizens with four-legged friends. According to News5Cleveland, it’s giving both seniors and their canine companions or feline friends a new lease on life.
The importance of Pets for the Elderly became apparent during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic when many seniors were isolated and social distancing at home. In addition to funding pet adoptions, the Pets for the Elderly program also offers financial support for veterinary services, retention assistance, food shortage support, and other services for adopters aged 60 or over at select shelters.
Pets for the Elderly currently works with 54 animal shelters in 32 states. To see if there is one near you, click here.
The Seniors Trust is committed to helping improve the lives of retirees. We are strong supporters of the Social Security Expansion Act which will increase monthly benefits, create a strong and long-lasting Trust Fund, and guarantee that every retired worker receives adequate Social Security benefits and a fair Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA).
