Retirement often means living life on a fixed income. For many retirees, this requires strict budgeting. However, as MoneyWise points out, sometimes you need to spend a little money to save money. It came up with a list of “dirt-cheap purchases that can make retirement in America so much more comfortable and enjoyable.” Here are our three favorites:

A bicycle – Not only is biking a wonderful low-impact exercise, but it’s also a great way to enjoy being outside, get fresh air, and save money on transportation costs.

AARP membership – With a one-year membership costing just $16, members can save hundreds on everything from car insurance to wireless service and vacations. With the money you save, maybe you can treat yourself to a new pair of shoes or dinner out while taking advantage of AARP’s discounts on shopping and dining.

National Park pass – Seniors can take advantage of the National Park Service’s America the Beautiful Pass. It’s a great way to travel and save yourself a lot of money as it provides entry to more than 2,000 sites managed by the Forest Service, Park Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, and more. Anyone 62 or older can get an annual pass for only $20 or a lifetime pass for just $80.

The Seniors Trust is committed to improving the financial well-being of America’s retirees through passage of The Social Security Expansion Act. It will give retirees an immediate benefits increase of about $200 a month, a fair annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), increased minimum benefits, and will ensure the long-term solvency of the Social Security program.
