As we head into the colder months and people will be spending more time indoors, experts agree it may be time to toss your cloth face masks and switch to surgical. According to a story by CNBC, experts agree disposable masks – like surgical and KN95 – work better. In fact, a study, currently under peer review, a found that surgical masks are 95% effective at filtering out virus particles — compared to just 37% for cloth masks.

For the highest level of protection, experts recommend wearing a KN95 or a surgical mask made from a non-woven plastic material called polypropylene – N95 masks should continue to be saved for use by healthcare workers. While the CDC does endorse disposable masks, it maintains that well-fitting cloth masks can still effectively prevent the spread of COVID-19. It contends that the best mask is one you will wear consistently and correctly. The ideal mask will have a metal bridge to mold over your nose, lie flat across your cheeks and cover your nose down to your chin without gaps along the sides.
