One thing many people worry about in retirement is whether they will be bored when they no longer spend their days at work. A Southern Living article suggests you take up a hobby, stating that hobbies are a great way to help keep you curious, connected, and creative.

The article recommends trying:

Gardening – it gets you out of the house and moving, plus it’s rewarding to plant a seed, tend to it, and watch it grow into something you can enjoy (and possibly eat)

Music – you can learn to play an instrument at any age, plus it challenges your brain and provides a creative outlet

Photography – smartphones make it easy to take excellent photographs of everything from landscapes and wildlife to the food you eat and the people and places you visit.

Arts and crafts – get creative while experimenting with artistic expression. Hobbies range from painting and drawing to crafts such as pottery, embroidery, jewelry making, or flower arranging.

Exercise – beyond the health benefits, taking up a new sport or activity, such as pickleball or yoga, provides opportunities for socializing.

The article says it’s okay to try out a few things in order to discover what it is you truly enjoy. Remember, the best hobbies are the ones that feel genuinely interesting to you.

The Seniors Trust is committed to improving the well-being of older Americans. We are doing that financially by encouraging lawmakers to enact the Social Security Expansion Act. This landmark piece of legislation will give retirees an immediate increase of about $200 a month in benefits, a fair annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), increased minimum benefits, and ensure the long-term solvency of the Social Security program.
