Beware – There’s Another Social Security Scam You Need to Know About

Another day, another scam alert. According to Newsweek, the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General is warning people about a government imposter scam that uses fake letters from the Supreme Court.
Scammers are sending official-looking letters on fake U.S. Supreme Court letterhead using forged signatures from Justices. It claims the letter recipient is a “primary suspect in connection with legal proceedings and criminal charges.” Making matters worse, the letter looks convincing and is personally addressed to the recipient.
The letter states that the Court requested financial institutions to freeze all the recipient’s assets and requires full cooperation with the U.S. Department of the Treasury. It puts pressure on the recipient to cooperate with the Social Security Administration by sending money and sharing personal information.
If you think you have been targeted by this scam, or any other, you should report it to ssa.gov/scam.
The Seniors Trust is committed to helping protect Social Security, and that includes providing important information to seniors on how to prevent fraud. We also want to see Congress pass the Social Security Expansion Act. It will give retirees an immediate benefits increase of about $200 a month, a fair annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), increased minimum benefits, and ensure the long-term solvency of the Social Security program.
