Watch Out! There’s a New Email Scam Going After Your Social Security

The Social Security Administration (SSA) and the Office of the Inspector General are warning the 72 million Americans receiving Social Security benefits to be aware of a new email scam.
According to a report by WKRC Local News 12 in Cincinnati, scammers are emailing Social Security recipients from what appears to be the SSA, telling them to download their statements. But clicking the link gives hackers access to the recipient’s personal information, including bank account credentials.
A cybersecurity expert warns that scammers are using Artificial Intelligence to craft more official-looking emails that don’t have the former tell-tale signs of fraud, such as misspelled words and incorrect grammar. One way to see if an email is legitimate is to verify that it originates from a “.gov” address.
The Seniors Trust is committed to helping protect Social Security, and that includes providing important information to seniors on how to prevent fraud. We also want to see Congress pass the Social Security Expansion Act. It will give retirees an immediate benefits increase of about $200 a month, a fair annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), increased minimum benefits, and ensure the long-term solvency of the Social Security program.
