What You Should Never Do With Your Social Security Card

Your Social Security card is an important document. To help preserve it, you might think about laminating it. But the Social Security Administration says not to do that.

According to AL.com, lamination can “prevent some of the card’s security features such as the blue marbleized paper designed to make it tamper-proof, embedded planchettes and raised printing.”

You should also not carry your Social Security card with you. Most often, you don’t need the physical card, as it’s not a form of identification.

If you do need to show proof, consider using the digital Social Security number feature. It allows account holders to display their numbers without having to produce a paper card. The number can be accessed through the “my Social Security” portal.

The Seniors Trust is committed to improving the well-being of older Americans. We are doing that financially by encouraging lawmakers to enact the Social Security Expansion Act. This landmark piece of legislation will give retirees an immediate increase of about $200 a month in benefits, a fair annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), increased minimum benefits, and ensure the long-term solvency of the Social Security program.
