Amidst his recently announced presidential bid, Bernie Sanders also introduced the Social Security Expansion Act (S.478).

“Social Security is the most successful government program in our nation’s history. Through good times and bad, Social Security has paid out every benefit owed to every eligible American,” Sanders said. “The most effective way to strengthen Social Security for the future is to eliminate the cap on the payroll tax on all income above $250,000 so millionaires and billionaires pay the same share as everyone else.

In a press conference introducing this crucial legislation, Sanders went on to state, “A great nation is not judged historically by the number of billionaires it has or the number of nuclear weapons it has. It is judged by how it treats the weakest and most vulnerable people amongst us… We’re here to say we’re going to expand Social Security benefits and extend the life of Social Security for our kids and grandkids.”

Sanders believes asking the wealthiest Americans to contribute their fair share into Social Security would not only extend the solvency of Social Security, it would also allow Social Security benefits to be expanded for millions of American citizens.
