A TikTok video posted by a new resident in an Arkansas retirement community has gone viral – racking up over three-million views. By all appearances you would not think this new tenant would fit in with her peers. You see, she’s younger than some of their grandkids.

As Insider reports, it all started when the 19-year-old found an apartment online and moved in sight unseen. She thought she had scored the bargain of the century, renting a two-bedroom apartment for only $350 per month. It wasn’t until about a week later that she spotted a sign saying it was a “senior citizen apartments” complex.

Despite the dramatic age difference, she was quickly embraced by her new neighbors. She says they bring her home-cooked meals and check-up on her. Although this wasn’t the life she expected in her first apartment, the teenager says she has no regrets – and jokingly offers this piece of advice to other young adults just starting out: “Remember, if you’re struggling with rent, start your early retirement.”

That’s actually great advice for all young people, as many seniors are now forced to live in these types of subsidized senior citizen apartments because that’s all they can afford with Social Security benefits. The Seniors Trust is working to help get seniors the retirement money they earned by passing legislation which guarantees retirees bigger monthly benefits and a fairer cost-of-living adjustment. Both could become a reality if Congress passes the Social Security Expansion Act.
