Pickleball is not the only game in town. Senior women are now taking to a different type of court. As KXAN in Austin reports, the Granny Basketball League is gaining popularity because it advances overall fitness — physical, mental, and emotional.

Basketball promotes a spirit of camaraderie, a model of sportsmanship, and friendly competition. Through the competitive six-on-six basketball league, women over 50 are finding friendships, building community, and staying in shape. The feature story explained how the game’s simple movements can help players stay mobile and reduce the risk of falling.

The Granny Basketball League started in 2005 with a few friends playing an exhibition game to raise money to preserve an old building in their town. It has since grown into an international phenomenon with 54 teams in the U.S. and one in Canada. New teams join the league every year.

The Seniors Trust is committed to improving the lives and financial well-being of older Americans through the passage of the Social Security Expansion Act. It will give retirees an immediate benefits increase of about $200 a month, a fair annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), increased minimum benefits, and ensure the long-term solvency of the Social Security program.
