Scammers Are Now Going After More Than Just Your Social Security Number

Lifehacker is warning people to be wary of emails they may receive regarding their Social Security statement. Hackers are now impersonating the Social Security Administration (SSA) and tricking people into downloading their Social Security statement, but the scam is worse than just that. In reality, they’re installing a remote access tool that gives the scammer full control of the unsuspecting victim’s device!
The article warns that once the hackers have control of the computer, they can install malware to transfer files or access sensitive data, such as bank information, all without the user’s knowledge.
As a reminder, do not click on links or download or open files or attachments sent via email, especially if the message is unsolicited. Instead, you should go directly to the company’s or organization’s website to access important documents and verify communication.
