The 10 Worst States for Retirees
Alaska is a great state to visit, but you probably don’t want to live there — especially if you’re a retiree. That’s the consensus from Bankrate’s list of worst states to retire in 2024. As CNBC explained, each year Bankrate compiles a list of the best and worst states to retire based on the following criteria: affordability, overall well-being, quality and cost of health care, weather, and crime.
So it’s not surprising that Alaska came in last with temperatures as low as negative 10 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter and the cost-of-living is about 30 percent higher than the rest of the country. Rounding out the list of the 10 worst states for retirees are New York, Washington, California, North Dakota, Massachusetts, Colorado, Maryland, Texas, and Minnesota.
The Seniors Trust is committed to improving the financial well-being of America’s retirees through the passage of The Social Security Expansion Act. It will give retirees an immediate benefits increase of about $200 a month, a fair annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), increased minimum benefits, and will ensure the long-term solvency of the Social Security program.
