VIDEO: How To Order A Replacement Social Security Card
Your Social Security card is probably one of the most important little slips of paper you have. But it’s just that – little – and that means it can easily be lost. Do NOT panic is you lose your Social Security card. Ordering a replacement card is really no big deal.
The Social Security Administration allows you replace a lost or stolen Social Security card up to three times within a year and up to 10 times throughout your lifetime. Ordering a new card because you changed your legal name or citizen status does not count toward the limits. There is no charge for a replacement card, and it should take about ten to 14 days to receive your new Social Security card by mail.
The easiest way to request a replacement card is online through your My Social Security account. However, you must be at least 18 years old, have a U.S. mailing address, and live in a state that shares its data with Social Security. (That’s every state except Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, and West Virginia.)
If you don’t have an online account, you can fill out an application and either mail it or take it to your local Social Security Administration office with the required documents. Keep in mind, local offices are currently closed due to COVID-19.
