The average Social Security retirement benefit check is just $1907 per month. That’s certainly not a lot of money, especially considering how much basic necessities such as groceries and gas cost these days. But as MoneyWise discovered, even those receiving the highest Social Security checks are still struggling.

It shared the results of a SmartAsset study to find the metro areas where retirees are receiving the biggest benefit checks. The top five cities are Ann Arbor, Michigan; Carmel, Indiana; Goodyear, Arizona; Cambridge, Massachusetts; and Allen, Texas. Even with benefits checks ranging from $4,851 to $7,544 more than the nationwide average, retirees in these cities still face financial struggles if trying to get by on Social Security alone.

The Seniors Trust is committed to improving the financial well-being of America’s retirees through the passage of The Social Security Expansion Act. It will give retirees an immediate benefits increase of about $200 a month, a fair annual COLA, increased minimum benefits, and will ensure the long-term solvency of the Social Security program.
