There’s a reason they say dogs are man’s best friend. They make wonderful companions, especially for seniors who live alone.

But being a pet owner can be pricey. As Best Life points out, “Pets can add a lot to your life, but they can be a lot financially, with both initial and unforeseen costs that can be tied to the breed you choose.” A veterinarian said it’s important to consider factors such as size, temperament, energy level, grooming needs, and potential for health issues when choosing a dog breed.

Here is their list of ten breeds that are good for seniors living on a tight budget: Bichon Frise, Maltese, Shih Tzu, Pekingese, Chihuahua, Havanese, Boston Terrier, Miniature Schnauzer, and Yorkshire Terrier.

The Seniors Trust is committed to improving the financial well-being of older Americans through the passage of the Social Security Expansion Act. It will give retirees an immediate benefits increase of about $200 a month, a fair annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), increased minimum benefits, and ensure the long-term solvency of the Social Security program.
