Either by vaccination and infection — or both — almost everyone in this country has some degree of immunity against Covid-19. The question is “how much?” A new test developed by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) may soon provide the answer.

Similar to a rapid antigen test for Covid-19, this new test measures the level of neutralizing antibodies that target the SARS-CoV-2 virus in a blood sample. Researchers designed the test so that different viral spike proteins could be used, allowing them to modify the test to detect immunity against any future variants.

According to MIT News, a patent on the technology has already been filed. The next step is to partner with a diagnostic company that could manufacture the devices and seek FDA approval.
