Are Senior Discount Days a Thing of the Past?

There’s no doubt about it: the price of groceries has gone up. This can be particularly distressing for retirees living on a fixed income. And, according to SavingAdvice.com, this could not come at a worse time, as many grocery stores are doing away with senior discount days.
Savvy seniors know that they can save, often between 5 and 10 percent, if they shop on certain days of the week and at certain stores. But it’s getting harder to take advantage of these types of deals because, according to the article, “some grocery chains have adjusted their discount schedules, limited participation, or shifted promotions to certain locations only.”
Here are a few grocery stores still offering discounts to senior shoppers:
- Harris Teeter — Customers age 60 and older who use a VIC loyalty card receive 5 percent off eligible purchases every Thursday at participating stores.
- Fred Meyer — Shoppers age 55 and older can get an additional 10 percent off select items on the first Tuesday of each month.
- Hy-Vee — Participating stores still offer discounts ranging from 5-to-10 percent for customers age 55 and older, but the exact day varies significantly by location.
With senior discounts being discontinued at many stores, the article suggests retirees try to take advantage of weekly digital coupons and store promotions to maximize savings.
The Seniors Trust is committed to improving the financial well-being of older Americans by passing the Social Security Expansion Act. It will give retirees an immediate increase of about $200 a month in benefits, a fair annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), increased minimum benefits, and ensure the long-term solvency of the Social Security program.
