Social Security Administration Offices are Finally Set to Reopen

After shutting down because of the coronavirus pandemic almost two years ago, Social Security Administration (SSA) offices are getting ready to reopen. According to an article in The New York Times, more than 1,200 Social Security customer service offices across the country could open their doors next month.

It seems the agency and the union representing its workers have finally reached an agreement. It’s contingent on changes in pandemic conditions and further negotiations. The bargaining should conclude by March 1 and then the agency needs 30 days to plan for office re-entry. So, if all goes as planned, SSA offices could reopen by the end of March.

In order to keep workers and visitors safe, the union negotiator says the agreement calls for all employees and visitors to wear masks in Social Security facilities, regardless of their vaccination status. Some positions will continue to work remotely.

The Seniors Trust is devoted to improving Social Security for all Americans. It wants Congress to enact the Social Security Expansion Act, which will increase benefits, create a strong and long-lasting trust fund, and guarantee every retired worker receives adequate Social Security benefits and a fair Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA).
