Today — March 7 — is National Slam the Scam Day. This should NOT be a one-day event. Everyone needs to be wary of scams all year long. The Social Security Administration (SSA) makes a variety of tools available to help you recognize Social Security-related scams and stop scammers from stealing your money and personal information.

A recent SSA email blast educated patrons about government imposter scams, letting people know they should not be embarrassed to report if they shared personal information or suffered a financial loss. It emphasized that potential victims should report the scam as quickly as possible. The SSA also offers a one-page Scam Alert fact sheet with tips on recognizing scammers and avoiding falling victim to a scam.

The Seniors Trust is committed to helping protect Social Security and that includes providing important information to seniors on how to prevent Social Security scams. We also want to see Congress pass The Social Security Expansion Act. It will give retirees an immediate benefits increase of about $200 a month, a fair annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), increased minimum benefits, and will ensure the long-term solvency of the Social Security program.
