What can $65 Buy?

The Seniors Trust is working to pass The Social Security Expansion Act. This legislation will increase Social Security benefits for most retirees by about $65 a month.

Some people may think a $65 a month increase isn’t a big benefits boost. But let’s take a look at what an extra $65 a month could cover:

1. A substantial grocery store trip:
  • Hamburger patties: $5
  • Hamburger buns $4
  • Garden salad: $2
  • Bottle of dressing: $4
  • Two boxes of pasta: $3
  • Pasta sauce: $3
  • Frozen garlic bread $4
  • One pound of turkey lunch meat: $8
  • Loaf of whole wheat bread: $5
  • Bottle of orange juice: $5
  • Gallon of milk: $5
  • Dozen eggs: $3
  • Three cans of vegetables: $5
  • One pound of fresh fruit: $4
Total: $60 with $5 left over

2. Internet access:

According to HighSpeedInternet.com, “internet packages vary greatly by location but on average cost about $50 per month.” The $65 a month increase seniors would receive from The Social Security Expansion Act could more than cover their internet bill each month.

3. The vast majority of a water bill:

Circle of Blue, an authority on water-related issues, places the average American family of four’s water bill at about $70 per month. Even if a single senior citizen, or a senior couple, uses the same amount of water as a family of four, the $65 benefit increase guaranteed by The Social Security Expansion Act would cover most of that water bill.

A Real Impact

It’s clear the benefit increase from The Social Security Expansion Act amounts to much more than mere pocket change. This benefits increase will help seniors pay for necessities and improve their lives.
