Many Americans opt to move during retirement. Whether it be seeking warmer weather or to be closer to family and friends, an estimated 234,000 American retirees moved last year. Not surprisingly, Yahoo! Finance says 12 percent of them were seeking cheaper housing.

When looking for low-key destinations Insider Monkey considered everything from population size (had to be under 50,000) to an affordable cost of living, adequate healthcare, as well as tolerable climate. Here are the cities making their list: Asheville, North Carolina; Greer, South Carolina; Cedar Key, Florida; Coolidge, Arizona; and, coming in at #1, Dillsboro, North Carolina.
