Everyone makes mistakes — even the Social Security Administration (SSA). For that reason, there is an appeals process set up in case you think Social Security miscalculated your benefit. However, an article by AS cautions that you must file the appeal within 60 days of receiving your initial letter.

You can file an appeal by downloading SSA-561, the “Request for Reconsideration” form, from the Social Security website and submitting it to your local Social Security office.

This is important information for retirees or those nearing retirement. However, if you are still working, you can help ensure mistakes are not made by checking your earnings record on your my Social Security account. The article recommends that if you think there is any incorrect information you call 800-772-1213 to request a correction.

The Seniors Trust is committed to improving the financial well-being of America’s retirees through passage of The Social Security Expansion Act. It will give retirees an immediate benefits increase of about $200 a month, establish a fair annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), increase minimum benefits, and ensure the long-term solvency of the Social Security program.
