Senate Begins Bipartisan Talks on Social Security
Two Senators are putting aside their political sides and starting bipartisan talks on how to fix issues surrounding Social Security solvency reported NBC News. In a joint statement, Sen. Bill Cassidy, a Louisiana Republican, and Sen. Angus King, an independent from Maine who caucuses with Democrats, said they were leading an effort aimed at bringing the parties together to “preserve and protect the retirement security of all Americans now and long into the future.”
The Seniors Trust prefers legislation proposed by another Independent — Sen. Bernie Sanders. The Social Security Expansion Act would extend the solvency of the Social Security trust fund through 2096 by lifting the income tax cap and subjecting all income above $250,000 to additional Social Security payroll tax. Not only that, but it would also increase benefits by about $200 per month. We say a plan that would extend Social Security for another 75 years and boost benefits is one we can stand behind.
