Is Your Social Security Payment Safe from a Government Shutdown?

The government came dangerously close to shutting down a few weeks ago. With just hours to spare, lawmakers reached a deal to keep the government funded through November 17. The threat of a shutdown had many seniors fearing their Social Security payments would have been cut off. Fortunately, that would not have happened.

According to NBC News, “Social Security is considered a mandatory program, and it isn’t funded by the shorter-term appropriations bills passed by Congress and signed by the president. That means its operations and funding don’t stop when the government shuts down.” So, Social Security benefit checks would still go out, even if the government is not working. This bit of knowledge should allow the 67 million Americans who receive Social Security benefits each month to breathe a sigh of relief.

The Seniors Trust is devoted to improving Social Security for all Americans. It wants Congress to enact the Social Security Expansion Act, which will increase benefits, create a strong and long-lasting trust fund, and guarantee every retired worker receives adequate Social Security benefits and a fair Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA).
